The Omega-3 Supply Landscape Is Shifting: Why Diversification Matters

The global omega-3 industry is entering a new era of supply uncertainty. Climate-driven disruption, increasing competition for marine resources and growing demand for EPA and DHA are placing new pressure on traditional fish oil supply. For supplement brands and manufacturers, securing a reliable source of omega-3s is becoming more than a sourcing challenge. It is increasingly a business imperative, making diversification a critical part of building long-term supply resilience. While fish oil remains an important source of omega-3s, algae-derived omega-3 is emerging as a valuable complementary option.

A Changing Landscape

One of the industry's greatest dependencies is Peru's anchovy fishery, which supplies approximately half of the world's fish oil used across dietary supplements, food and pharmaceutical applications. Today, climate instability, changing ocean conditions, reduced fish stocks and growing competition from aquaculture are creating sustained pressure on fish oil availability. The scale of the challenge is illustrated by the decline in available human-grade 18:12 crude fish oil, which has fallen from approximately 85,000 metric tons to roughly 10,000 metric tons, representing a dramatic 90% reduction in commercially usable supply for the supplement and pharmaceutical sectors.

The implications extend well beyond procurement. Constrained supply can affect ingredient costs, inventory levels, margins, product development and ultimately business continuity. At the same time, demand for EPA and DHA continues to grow, with aquaculture representing approximately 80% of global fish oil demand, alongside rising demand in areas such as healthy aging, GLP-1-related nutrition, pet health and emerging consumer markets.2

Together, these pressures are creating a widening gap between supply and demand and highlighting the need for brands to rethink how, and from where, they source omega-3s.

Building Resilience Through a Broader Omega-3 Strategy

Recent omega-3 supply volatility has reinforced a simple lesson: resilience cannot be built once disruption occurs, it needs to be part of the strategy from the start. Brands with diversified sourcing, strong supplier partnerships, forward-looking inventory planning and adaptable formulations are better positioned to navigate shifts in availability, pricing and market conditions.

Fish oil will continue to play an important role in the omega-3 category, but overreliance on a single source can create unnecessary vulnerability. Incorporating complementary sources such as algae-derived DHA can give brands greater flexibility, strengthen supply resilience and create opportunities for innovation.

The goal is not to move away from fish oil, but to build a more balanced and flexible omega-3 sourcing strategy, one that reduces dependency, anticipates disruption and creates new opportunities to differentiate.

For brands, future-proofing omega-3 supply starts with taking a broader view of sourcing today. Algae-derived DHA offers a complementary pathway to diversify supply, helping brands build greater flexibility and resilience while continuing to meet growing demand for omega-3 nutrition.
